Why The Future Doesn't Need Us

That is the title of Bill Joy's (co-founder of Sun Microsystems) lengthy explanation of the dangers that accompany over reliance upon technology. (Wired, April 2000, www.wired.com) Mr. Joy and I share a reference to the ravings of Ted Kaczynski (OTE 8/97: Beware of Automation and Computers) but little else. That's because none of his stark scenarios are expected to occur in my lifetime. At my age, worry about a technological Armageddon would make as much sense as the worried listener to a science radio program who called in to ask: "How long did you say it would take for the sun to burn out?" Upon hearing the reply '60 Million years', he responded "Thank goodness. I thought you said 60,000."
